WHAT SIZE DIY KIT DO I NEED?

The most relevant aspect of sizing a system is based on the surface area square footage of your pool, rather than volume. We recommend matching anywhere from 50%-140% of your pools total surface area to solar collector coverage (solar panels).

  • 3-4 Month Swimming Season: If you are only looking to add some additional heating during the summer months (3-4 months of warm swimming pool temperatures), 50% offset should be sufficient.
  • 4-6 Month Swimming Season: If you are looking to heat your pool into the shoulder months (4-6 month swimming season), you will want to aim in the 60-80% range.
  • 6-8 Month Swimming Season: If you are looking for a full spring-fall season extension (6-8 month swimming season), you will want to aim for 80%-100% offset.
  • 8-9 Month Swimming Season: If you are looking for a full spring-fall season extension (8-9 month swimming season), you will want to aim for 100%-120% offset.
  • 9-10 Month Swimming Season: If you are looking for a full spring-fall season extension (9-10 month swimming season), you will want to aim for 120%-140% offset.

For example: If your pool is 500 square feet (20ft x 25ft surface area), then

  • 50% solar coverage equals 250 square feet of solar panels
  • 75% solar coverage equals 375 square feet of solar panels
  • 100% solar coverage equals 500 square feet of solar panels
  • 120% solar coverage equals 600 square feet of solar panels
  • 140% solar coverage equals 700 square feet of solar panels

To Measure your pool’s surface area, we recommend using the free online tool Google Earth on yours App-store or your computer’s web browser and following these steps:

  1. Type your address into the search bar and zoom into your address and pool.
  2. Click the Measure tool which looks like ruler on both the app and the website
  3. Start Selecting points one after another following along the edge of the water eventually completing the shape of your pool back connecting to the first point.
  4. Once completed, a pop up will appear showing the “total area” of your pool. This is the surface area that will be used to calculate what size system you need
  5. Which Panels Will Fit on Your Roof?

The SunValue DIY Kits offer three panel sizes varying in length to accommodate all roofs, including: 4ft x 8ft (32 sq.ft.), 4ft x 10ft (40 sq.ft.), and 4ft x 12ft (48 sq.ft.). To ensure they fit your roof properly, follow these steps:
To evaluate your roof we recommend using the free tool of google earth.

Step 1: Assess Your Roof Layout/ Prioritize Roof Space
When choosing roof space, prioritize in this order:

  1. South
  2. South West
  3. Western
  4. South East
  5. East (Add 15%-20% to compensate for BTU production loss)

We don't recommend north-facing roofs unless they're flat and unshaded. If you're using a ground rack, face the panels southward.

Step 2: Measure Your Roof
Follow these steps to measure your roof on Google Earth:

  1. Type your address into the search bar and zoom into your address and roof.
  2. Select the area of the roof you plan to use, preferably a southern-facing portion.
  3. Click the Measure tool which looks like ruler on both the app and the website
  4. Measure Length. Panels must be oriented with the header and footer at the top and bottom. Measure the length from the lower pitch to the upper pitch of your roof. Add 6-18 inches for plumbing.

For example:

If you have 14ft, all panel sizes will fit with plumbing. If you have 12ft, the 10ft and 8ft panels will fit with plumbing. If you have 10ft, the 8ft panel will fit with plumbing.

  • Measuring Width. Determine how many panels can fit in one bank. Each panel is 4ft wide. Measure the width from side to side of your roof and add 6-18 inches for plumbing.

For example:

If you have a 42ft wide roof, a bank of 10 panels will fit. If you have a 30ft wide roof, a bank of 7 panels will fit. If you have a 22ft wide roof, a bank of 5 panels will fit.

These steps will help you determine which panels are suitable for your roof for a successful installation. If there are any obstruction like vents or air-conditioning units, we recommend using our row spacer kit to work around these. Individual tubes between the header and footer can often be pulled around smaller vents from 2-4” and are positioned in the middle of the panel.

You have the option of including a full set of valves necessary for completing the plumbing connections from your solar pool heating panels to your pool's pump & filtration system. This package of Premium Pentair Pool Valves has been bundled together to provide you with a complete set of the best valves you can get (should you choose to include them).

If you are installing a system for the first time, these valves will be needed to complete the plumbing connection from your solar panels to your pool's pump and filtration system. If you are replacing an existing system, these valves may already be in place, and new ones would then not be needed.

Generally Speaking:

  • For new installations (first time installs): Valves will be needed.
  • For replacing an old/existing system: Valves not required.

If you choose to include valves, you will receive a full set of Premium Pentair CPVC Optimum positive-seal pool valves. These are top of the line valves that provide a lifetime of superior performance and have excellent flow characteristics for a high flow rate, ideal for maximizing the performance and efficiency of your solar pool heating system.

A 3-port diverter valve is manually adjusted to turn solar on and off. Two isolation valves are used to completely shut off solar for maintenance and winterization (prevents water from entering the solar panels). The check valve is used to prevent water from flowing backwards through your pump & filter. Includes premium Pentair lube-free valve’s, 2″-2.5″ CPVC.

If you choose to include valves, you will receive the following:

  • (1) Pentair 3-Port Solar Valve w/ Drain Down, CPVC, 2″-2.5″
  • (2) Pentair 2-Port Check Valve, CPVC, 2″-2.5″

Solar Pool Supply is not responsible for any damage incurred as the result of customer negligence or installation error and such incidents are not covered by warranty. All solar heating panels “Collectors” must be installed with new hardware for warranty coverage to apply. For all warranty claims and replacements, the customer is responsible for covering all shipping costs.

Tips to Protect your Purchase

Verify the condition of your product. Any product that arrives damaged or defective must be reported within 72 hours of delivery. Once this window has elapsed, the recipient acknowledges that the product has arrived free of damage or defect and accepts full responsibility for the condition of the product. Future concerns relating to the performance or function of the product must be addressed through a warranty claim subject to the terms and conditions of the manufacturer’s warranty policy.

Use caution when walking near solar collectors.
These products are not designed to be walked or stepped on; such actions may damage the collector and/or riser tubes. Accidental damage during installation is not covered by warranty.

Use only new hardware.
Reusing old hardware has been shown to damage new solar collectors. For warranty coverage to apply, all solar pool heating panels “Collectors” must be installed with new hardware.

Use caution installing rubber couplings.
Damage may result from couplings being pushed too far onto the header manifold, tearing outside riser tubes. This occurs when clamps are left untightened and additional collectors are added. Each side of the coupling should be tightened to the manifold before attempting to insert the other side. Using new hardware WITH internal rubber stoppers virtually eliminates this problem, however caution should still be exercised to mitigate this problem completely.
